The Atari 2600, the grand-daddy of all game consoles... At the same time a horrible piece of hardware design, created by a bunch of pot-smoking hippies. The system was designed to run Pong and Combat, and the whole hardware design reflects that. 2 modifyable 8pixel sprites that have to be updated at each scanline, 2 missiles and a ball, a soundchip linear soundfrequency, in short: Everything a programmer could wish for.... If he was developing Pong or Atari Combat that is ;-)
That doesn't mean that i'm not a fan. Don't get me wrong i like the system and its place in history, and i like the challenge. What it does mean is that getting anything other than Pong or Combat out of this baby requires an immense amount of skill, and therefore i hold Atari 2600 programmers in the highest regard.
As with the Colecovision i'm still working on a solid framework before i can properly release my first game for the system. However a multicolor menusystem, soundsystem, etc. are currently in place but with so many classic systems to work on, i always have to choose how to best divide my time between them.
I will have more concrete information on my Atari 2600 projects (along with screenshots, etc. ) early 2013.
